研究问题

This study investigated the effects of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (MSB) on production performance, reproductive hormone profiles, and gut microbiota-metabolite interactions in late-laying quails.

方法

Animals and diet A total of 400 healthy Korean laying quails (8 months old, a laying-type strain derived from Japanese quail) with similar laying performance were randomly divided into two groups with four replicates per group (50 birds/ replicate).;The dosage of 500 mg/kg was selected based on the manufacturer’s rec- ommendation for poultry use.;Animal Microbiome (2026) 8:108 Laying performance Throughout the trial, eggs from each group were col- lected and weighed once daily.

核心结论

Over the entire experimental period, the overall laying rate in the MSB group (76.25±2.6%) was signifi- cantly higher than that in the CON group (65.50±6.89%).;During weeks 1–4, the laying rate was 77.68±2.71% in the MSB group com- pared to 64.62±8.76% in the CON group (P<0.05).;It remained elevated in the MSB group at 74.82±3.15%, relative to 66.37±5.15% in CON group during weeks 5–8 (P<0.05). ‖ 结论:These benefits are likely driven by MSB-induced shifts in gut microbiota and metabolite profiles that support reproductive endocrine function, highlighting MSB as a practical microbiota-targeted strategy to help extend the productive lifespan of laying poultry.

局限

Beyond identifying MSB-responsive bacterial taxa and metabolites, our mediation analysis provided preliminary mechanistic clues linking microbial shifts to host repro- ductive physiology.;However, several important limitations warrant consid- eration.
