研究问题

The pathologizing of homosexuality even during this repressive era did not go unchallenged, however, as Kun- zel also highlights mid-twentieth century queer activists’ efforts to contest “the medical model of homosexuality” and the psychiatric authority that underpinned the medicalization of their nonconforming sexualities (2017, 237–240).;At the same time, however, a new set of medical and health-related issues would arise as the enactment of more draconian drug and sentencing laws starting in the 1970s meant that the U.S. prison population would balloon to unprecedented lev- els.;As might be expected, however, efficiency and lower costs sacrificed the quality of care incarcerated people received—or failed to receive.

方法

But while mid-twentieth century laws criminalizing homosexuality would eventually be repealed and the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Men- tal Disorders in 1973, Kunzel proposes that mid-twentieth century medical discourse on homosexuality offers a “preview and genealogy of the seemingly ever-expanding regime of sex offender surveillance and punishment” that would develop in the 1990s as the U.S. carceral state expanded (Kunzel 2017, 231).;While this topic has been explored in journalism and in a report by the Center for Justice at Columbia University, medical humanities scholars, especially those interested in aging, dying, and end-of-life care, might turn their attention to the experiences, technologies, and bioethics of these topics in carceral settings, and perhaps how they compare to non-incarcerated contexts (“Agi
