研究问题
However, within the original Blue Zones, there is growing concern that younger generations are increasingly adopting modernized, less healthful lifestyles.;Yet, in Sardinia, evidence suggests that children from Villagrande—a village within the Blue Zone—continue to consume a healthier diet compared to children from non–Blue Zone areas, and Villagrande reports the lowest levels of childhood obesity in Italy.;This study compared dietary practices between older and younger generations within the Loma Linda Blue Zone area and surrounding communities to evaluate whether these efforts have been sufficient to sustain adherence to traditional vegetarian dietary patterns among younger cohorts.
方法
Data collection took place at health fairs and community events held in Loma Linda and in nearby communities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, California, where participants completed a questionnaire.;Specific residential address data were not collected; therefore, it was not possible to determine what proportion of participants resided within the city of Loma Linda vs. surrounding communities.;Participants self-reported their height in inches and weight in pounds on the questionnaire.;The inclusion criteria included adults aged 18 years or older who spoke English.
核心结论
Gender distribution differed significantly by diet group, with a higher proportion of males among vegetarians (n = 147; 61.3%) compared to non-vegetarians (n = 192; 51.2%) (P = .015).;Overall, 120 (19.5%) were aged 18-35 years, 198 (32.2%) were 36-65 years, and 297 (48.3%) were 66 years or older.;Age varied significantly by diet group (P = .008); vegetarians were more likely to be older adults (n = 125; 52.1%), compared to non-vegetarians (n = 172; 45.87%). ‖ 结论:These findings highlight the importance of preserving health-promoting traditions within the Loma Linda Blue Zone area and surrounding communities, especially among younger generations who may be influenced by schools, society, and the increasing availability of fast foods.
局限
Future research employing rigorous, cohort-based designs is warranted to evaluate the retention of these lifestyle practices across age groups and to better understand the social and environmental factors that facilitate or hinder the preservation of healthy, longevity-promoting behaviors in Blue Zone and Adventist populations.;In summary, the findings underscore that vegetarian dietary patterns are associated with lower BMI and appear more prevalent among male and older participants in this sample, a gender distribution that likely reflects the demographic profile of long-tenured SDA community members and warrants further investigation in future studies.;Our study found a lower prevalence o
