研究问题
In KFACS as well, we aim to explore the potential utilization of features extracted from voice and facial video as new digital indicators that can assess and predict frailty and functional decline based on existing physical/cognitive function and clinical data. This expansion of research may contribute to the analysis of long-term changes in the existing cohort and the characteristics of newly recruited generations, as well as to the identification of factors and predictive indicators influencing the onset and progression of frailty.
方法
Frailty is dynamic and can worsen or improve over time, underscoring the importance of long-term monitoring and management.② What new information is presented?Long-term Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS) data have elucidated frailty transitions and their associations with sarcopenia, physical and cognitive function, disability, and healthcare utilization among older Korean adults.;As the KFACS enters its 10th year, it is expanding its research scope by recruiting new participants and collecting digital data, including voice recordings and facial images.③ What are implications?Integrating data from newly recruited participants with digital data may improve early frailty prediction, advance healthy aging research, and inform frailty prevention and management.IntroductionIn the Republic of Korea (ROK), as of 2025, the older population aged 65 and over accounts for 20.3% of the total population, and it is projected to increase to exceed 30% in 2036 and 40% in 2050 [1].;Furthermore, because frailty status can transition among robust, pre-frail, and frail over time, longitudinal studies that repeatedly measure health status and related factors in the same participants—rather than merely capturing frailty prevalence at a single point in time—are necessary [5].
核心结论
These results demonstrate that it is important to identify risk factors early and implement appropriate preventive management before frailty worsens, showing the potential to prevent or delay the progression of frailty.2)Research related to sarcopeniaSarcopenia is a representative geriatric syndrome associated with declines in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, and is closely related to frailty.;This finding indicates that while frailty and sarcopenia share some characteristics, they also possess distinct clinical features.KFACS has also been used to examine the application of international diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia and to evaluate screening and assessment methods for community-dwelling older adults in the ROK.;These studies demonstrate that KFACS is being utilized as a research foundation capable of conducting screening, risk factor, and prediction research as well as epidemiological studies on sarcopenia.3)Major health outcomes and prognostic research related to frailtyStudies using KFACS follow-up data have examined the associations between frailty and major subsequent health outcomes, including functional decline and disability.
局限
However, in cases where center visits are difficult due to mobility or health reasons, home visits are conducted.;Frailty prevalence showed a trend of increasing with age, and various factors were associated with frailty, including nutritional risk, sarcopenia, mobility limitation, depressive symptoms, polypharmacy, low social capital, and low physical performance [8].In particular, frailty exhibits dynamic characteristics that can change over time among robust, pre-frail, and frail states.;Furthermore, participants who performed poorly on the five-times sit-to-stand test had a higher risk of adverse health outcomes at follow-up, including slower gait speed and functional limitations, suggesting the potential prognostic value of physical performance measures [21].
