研究问题
We need to know if and how they already access neuroscience research in response to policy challenges they are facing in their communities, as well as if they would like to engage more than they currently are.
方法
We conducted four nationally representative surveys of policymakers from July 29, 2025, to October 13, 2025.;The sample of local elected policymakers (N = 366) is randomly drawn from a comprehensive list of local elected officials in US township, municipality, and county governments serving communities of 1,000 or more.;The sample of state legislators (N = 267) is randomly drawn from a comprehensive list of legislators in all 50 states.;CivicPulse recruited all respondents via email (with one initial email and two follow-ups) and used its standard consent language.
核心结论
These response rates meet and/or exceed those from other nationwide surveys of state and/or local policymakers recently published in several high impact journals (which are between 7 and 13%; ; ; ).;Across all four types of policymakers, direct interaction with a neuroscientist was the least common recent type of engagement (with just one exception—slightly more state legislators had directly interacted with a neuroscientist at least once over the past year than had learned about neuroscience research via blogs): 13.8% of local elected officials (95% CI: 10.3, 18.4%), 19.7% of local staff (95% CI: 12.4, 29.8%), 28.6% of state legislators (95% CI: 22.5, 35.6%), and 18.2% of state staff (95% CI: 12.2, 26.2%) reported that they had interacted with a neuroscientist at least once over the past year. ‖ 结论:Overall, our results suggest that, when working to protect and promote the health of their communities, many policymakers are not currently engaged with neuroscience but would like to be.
局限
We were mindful that some policymakers may not be very familiar with neuroscience and the overlap of its purview with their work.;This description read as follows (in which “[decision-makers]” was filled in as appropriate for each sample): Notably, this paragraph also employed language to acknowledge and legitimize that some policymakers may engage with neuroscience research and others may not.
