研究问题
Building on this work, the present study used whole-brain voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to examine whether gray matter associations extended beyond predefined regions in an expanded, partially overlapping sample of cognitively unimpaired older adults.;Following the approach used in the prior study , participants were stratified into relatively younger (<70 years) and older (≥70 years) groups to determine whether the previously reported age-stratified pattern remained evident in the expanded sample using whole-brain VBM.;We hypothesized that greater perceived financial exploitation vulnerability would be associated with lower gray matter volume in the older group, particularly in medial temporal and default mode network regions vulnerable to aging and preclinical AD.
方法
Participants were recruited from community outreach events, local senior centers, and the Alzheimer's Prevention Registry in the greater Los Angeles area.;Inclusion criteria for the FCDNA study required participants to be at least 50 years of age and fluent in English.;Eligible participants completed an in-laboratory visit consisting of self-report behavioral questionnaires, comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).;For the present study, we selected 128 participants (aged 51 to 87 years, 76% female) from the broader FCDNA study who obtained a score of 26 or higher on the Mini-Mental Status Examination , consistent with prior work using this threshold to define cognitively unimpaired older adults , .
核心结论
There were no significant differences between the older and younger age groups in years of education (older = 16.25 ± 2.41; younger = 16.70 ± 1.87; p = 0.237) or sex distribution (70% vs. 81% female; p = 0.260; see for full demographic characteristics).;Racial and ethnic composition was similar across groups, with the overall sample identifying as 68% White, 20% Asian, 5.5% Black or African American, 4.7% Multiracial, 1.6% Other, and 0.8% Unknown.;Age groups differed modestly in global cognition as measured by the MMSE, with lower scores in the older group (28.36 ± 1.23) relative to the younger group (28.88 ± 1.11; p = 0.013). ‖ 结论:The findings highlight the potential value of considering financial vulnerability alongside cognitive, psychosocial, and functional measures when examining individual differences across later adulthood.
局限
Because these analyses were based on clusters selected from the primary VBM analyses, they were not independent confirmatory tests and should be interpreted as exploratory characterization of the observed associations.;Together, the findings indicate cross-sectional associations between perceived financial exploitation vulnerability and regional gray matter volume that may vary across later adulthood.;Preliminary studies in Greek samples have also associated financial capacity with right amygdala and left angular gyrus volumes and financial literacy with left amygdala volume in samples including healthy older adults and individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment , .
