研究问题
Aging is associated with reductions in measures of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) morphometry across the adult lifespan, 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 including cortical thickness.
方法
Study procedures were approved by The Ohio State University Institutional Review Board, and written informed consent was obtained from all participants.;Of the 18 participants who were excluded for invalid VO2peak, 2 were young adults, 4 were middle‐aged adults, and 12 were older adults.;26 Participants were excluded from analysis if the Euler number was less than 2 standard deviations below the sample's mean (< −35).
核心结论
Consistent with age‐related declines in fitness, VO2peak was significantly greater in middle‐aged adults compared to older adults, p < 0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI) = [4.38, 10.08], and in young adults compared to older adults, p < 0.001, 95% CI = [6.51, 12.54].;All plots shown have a significant Age × VO2peak interaction of q < 0.05 or marginally significant interaction of q < 0.1.;All plots are thresholded to only show significant relationships of p < 0.05. ‖ 结论:These findings suggest that nonlinear modeling may capture important variation in the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and cortical thickness across the adult lifespan.
局限
Future studies should investigate nonlinear relationships with cognition to further understand the mechanisms driving this relationship.;Our aim was to establish a methodological foundation for applying nonlinear modeling in this relationship, thereby providing a basis for future studies to refine and extend these findings.;To further extend these findings, it would be important for future studies with larger samples to implement a whole‐brain analysis approach—for example, using all ROIs from a whole‐brain parcellation—or utilize GAMs at the vertex level.
