Age-related declines in brain antioxidant capacity and cerebral blood flow (CBF) contribute to cognitive decline and increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementias. Dietary approaches that enhance cerebral antioxidant defenses and CBF may promote brain health during aging. Blueberries are rich in polyphenols with antioxidant properties, and cardiometabolic and endothelial benefits, and may improve both brain glutathione (GSH), a major endogenous antioxidant, and CBF. However, the effects of blueberry intake on brain GSH and CBF have not been well established.
